Our History

During the fall of 1999, Bishop Daniel Herzog commissioned a Futures Committee to evaluate the existing diocesan conference centers and make recommendations on how they could best serve the diocese well into the twenty-first century. After an exhaustive study, the committee concluded that our existing facilities simply did not meet our current needs nor could they in the future.

Once a working bull ranch known as Leatherstocking Farms, the property had lain empty and unused for a number of years.  With inspiring views of the countryside, a thirty-six acre private lake, several peaceful ponds, a thirty-acre nature preserve and natural wetland, miles of trails, and 1600 feet of frontage on the Battenkill River, the property is simply spectacular. 

Over the course of several years, the property was transformed into a Center for the service of God and His people.  The gorgeous stone manor house became the Barry House Library with a cozy residential wing, and an existing barn became the Oratory of Christ the Healer!  New building such as the CtK Chapel and most recently The King's Inn were constructed for the various needs of the Center.

Today Christ the King Spiritual Life Center is a thriving community visited by people from all over the world, offering a wide variety of programs, accommodations and resources for ministry.
